Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise at the age of an infant. The aunt was on the night shifts as a nursing assistant to ensure she could indulge her passion of theater and literature during the day. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's example how art could serve as an activist vehicle. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was socially conscious and taught that she could express her thoughts through art. While DuVernay was raised in Compton with her family, she was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. Her father recalled watching the Civil Rights Movement's historic march along the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summer and was in awe of the idea to film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. Upon graduation, DuVernay studied in the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English as well as African American study. DuVernay started producing in broadcast journalism when she was in her university. She worked as a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was able to recall being assigned the task of watching the house and examining the trash from one of the jury. The duties she was required to perform left her dissatisfied and so, after deciding to not pursue journalism, she shifted to the world of publicity. DuVernay found a job immediately after college as a new publicist at a studio. She was hired in 1999 and established her own business that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency. Apart from PR, the agency also created a variety of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
